About Mark

Dr Mark O’Connell has worked for 25 years as a professional ecologist and conservation scientist in many parts of the world. His research focuses primarily on the impacts of human activities on species, habitats and diversity. He has particular expertise in spatial ecology using geographical information systems (GIS) and in methods to evaluate conservation actions. In the 1980s he worked for the British Antarctic Survey, including three years ecological fieldwork on South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. Since then, he has worked the Head of Research in a large conservation NGO (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust), and also as Director of an ecological and research consultancy. He has been working on conservation capacity issues for the past six years. He currently lectures in ecology at the University of Gloucestershire in the UK.
